Tarangire National Park covers about 2,850 km2 and gets its name from the Tarangire River that traverses the park. The park is famous for its high density of elephants and baobab trees. Visitors to the park in the June to November dry season see large herds of thousands of zebra, wildebeest and cape buffalo. Other common animals include waterbuck, giraffe, dik dik, impala, eland, Grant’s gazelle, vervet monkey, banded mongoose, and olive baboon, lion, leopard, cheetah, caracal, honey badger, and African wild dog.

In addition to 550 bird species, the park is known for termite mounds. When abandoned, the mounds are often home to dwarf mongoose.
