Akagera National Park - Rwanda

Akagera National Park is the centerpiece for all Rwanda Big Five safaris. It is Rwanda’s premier destination to encounter the legendary Big Five — lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos — in their natural savanna habitat, making it one of the most exciting and rewarding classic safari experiences in East Africa.

The strategic location of Akagera National Park makes it one of the most accessible savanna parks in the region. It is only about a 2-hour drive from Kigali International Airport, allowing visitors to reach the wildlife-rich plains quickly and comfortably for an unforgettable game drive or boat safari adventure.

Besides the iconic Big Five, the park is home to thriving populations of giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and a rich variety of antelopes and other mammals, as well as nearly 500 species of birds. Together, these wonderful animals make Akagera National Park a complete and unforgettable Rwanda safari destination.

Spanning an area of approximately 1,122 square kilometers in the eastern part of Rwanda, Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s largest protected area and Central Africa’s largest protected wetland. This vital sanctuary has become a remarkable conservation success story, with lions and rhinos successfully reintroduced and now thriving, protecting the last stronghold for savanna-adapted wildlife in the country.

The landscape of Akagera National Park is truly spectacular, with vast open savanna plains and grasslands, acacia woodlands, rolling hills offering dramatic panoramic views, and shimmering lakes fringed by expansive papyrus wetlands that create a beautiful and diverse setting. Game drives across the plains in search of the Big Five and serene boat safaris on Lake Ihema to observe hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife from the water are experiences that touch the heart and create memories that last a lifetime.

At Kalama Safaris, we are proud to offer well-organized Big Five safaris, guided game drives, and boat safaris in Akagera National Park. Our experienced guides will help you plan every detail, prepare you for the adventure, and ensure you have a safe, responsible, and deeply rewarding experience in this extraordinary corner of East Africa.
