FOUNDER & LEAD GUIDE
My journey into safari guiding began over forty years ago in my childhood, growing up near Kenya’s iconic landscapes. I spent countless days tracking animals and absorbing the rhythms of the bush. That early passion for wildlife and storytelling eventually led me to work as a driver and guide for some of the most respected safari operators in Kenya. After years of honing my craft and dreaming of a more intimate, conservation-focused way of sharing my homeland, I founded Kalama Safaris nine years ago with a clear mission: to offer responsible, deeply personal safaris that showcase the raw beauty and soul-stirring wildlife of East Africa.

Best Safaris Ever
The two of us have had David for ten years going on eleven in 2026. The first time we went we knew he was the best and we have travelled all over the world so that is saying something. He knows where to find the wildlife. As well as being very personal and knowledgeable. There is no one else we would ever get and we have come across many guides.

Unforgettable Kenya Safari & Rwanda Gorilla Trek with Kalama Safaris! Trip of a Lifetime! My husband and I just returned from the "Big 5" safari in Kenya and Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda with Kalama Wildlife & Photographic Safaris, and we are absolutely blown away. This was, without a doubt, the most spectacular and well-organized travel experience we've ever had. The Kenya portion was a wildlife photographer's dream.

Don't hesitate for One second About Using Kalama Safaris We had met David several years ago when he worked for a company that we used, at that time. We were so impressed with the depth of knowledge that he not only had but being able to share this with everyone in the group, which was quite diverse in nature. When we learned that he had formed his own company we immediately wanted to see him again. We brought our 13-year-old grandchild along. David was the "perfect" host. Again, the depth of his knowledge was beyond anything we could possibly imagine. We cannot, in words, express the over-the-top admiration and appreciation for David Kalama and the organization he has developed. We highly recommend his company, Kalama Wildlife and Photographic Safaris.

Unforgettable African Safari Experience Words cannot describe this amazing trip of a lifetime. From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed and cared for. The guides were amazing, knowledgeable, and passionate and made every game drive exciting and unforgettable. We saw the Big 5 on day one. This experience left us with incredible memories and deep appreciation for the people, wildlife, and culture of Africa. The accommodations were beyond our expectations and were beautiful, cozy, with freshly cooked meals every day. They even accommodated for my gluten allergy. If you ever get a chance to go on a trip of a lifetime, go on a safari with Kalama Safaris. We cannot wait to do it again.

- Questions
Questions Answered
When guests first sit down with me, their eyes light up with curiosity. Here’s how I love answering their most common questions — and why so many return year after year as part of the Kalama family.
Where exactly are we going?
From the golden savannas of the Maasai Mara and Serengeti, where the Great Migration unfolds in all its drama, to the red-earth wilderness of Tsavo and the intimate elephant encounters at Ithumba, the landscapes of Kenya and Tanzania inspire awe. From the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro rising behind herds of elephants in Amboseli, to the misty volcanoes of Rwanda and the rugged beauty of Samburu, every region reveals a different face of East Africa.
Every destination we offer is handpicked for its outstanding wildlife density, dramatic landscapes, and authentic soul. We don’t just take you to Africa — we take you straight to its beating heart.
Whether you dream of witnessing millions of wildebeest crossing the river, walking with rescued elephants, or simply sitting in silence as the sun sets over the savanna, we know exactly where to go.
What language do people speak?
Don’t worry — communication is easy and warm.
English is widely spoken and understood throughout Kenya and East Africa, so you’ll feel comfortable from the moment you arrive. Your guides, lodge staff, and drivers all speak excellent English, ensuring every part of your safari is seamless and enjoyable.
That said, one of the joys of traveling with us is picking up a few local words. A simple “Jambo!” (Hello!) or “Asante sana” (Thank you very much) goes a long way — often met with bright smiles and even warmer hospitality. These small exchanges help create genuine connections with the wonderful people who call this land home.
Whether you’re chatting with your guide about animal behavior or sharing stories around the campfire, you’ll never feel lost in translation.
Where will we stay?
This is where the dream becomes reality.
Forget any idea of basic camping — our luxury tented camps and lodges are sophisticated wilderness sanctuaries. These are true four- and five-star experiences placed right in the heart of the African bush.
Imagine waking up to the gentle sounds of the wild, stepping onto your private veranda to watch elephants grazing just meters away, or enjoying sundowners as lions rest in the golden light. Each accommodation offers:
- Spacious, elegantly furnished tents or rooms to accommodate one to four people
- En-suite bathrooms with hot showers
- Private verandas with breathtaking views
- Plunge pools at select camps for ultimate relaxation
Thoughtfully designed to blend luxury with nature, these special places let you feel immersed in the wilderness while enjoying exceptional comfort.
New award-winning camps open every year, so even returning guests always have something fresh and exciting to discover.
You’ll fall asleep to the symphony of the bush… and wake up to it again the next morning.
What about the food and drinks?
You won’t just eat — you’ll indulge.
Our talented chefs create a wonderful blend of international favorites and authentic African-inspired dishes using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Expect flavorful, beautifully presented meals that surprise and delight at every turn.
From gourmet multi-course dinners served under a blanket of stars, to hearty bush breakfasts with panoramic views, and refreshing lunches after exciting game drives — the food is consistently excellent.
You’ll also enjoy:
- Premium wines from South Africa and beyond
- A selection of spirits, beers, and cocktails
- Freshly ground coffee, teas, and a variety of non-alcoholic options
Whether you’re celebrating with a glass of champagne at sunset or relaxing with a cold drink around the campfire, we take care of every detail so you can fully enjoy the experience.
How do we get around?
We explore East Africa in our custom-designed Safari Cruisers — rugged, spacious, and purpose-built for the terrain.
These specially modified 4×4 vehicles feature:
- Open sides and fully pop-up roofs for nearly 360° views
- Elevated seating so you can see over tall grass
- Ample space for comfortable seating and photography
- Expert local drivers who know every track and animal path
Whether we’re tracking a pride of lions, following the Great Migration, or quietly approaching a herd of elephants, you’ll feel completely immersed in the landscape. The breeze on your face, the thrill of being eye-level with wildlife, and the freedom to stand up for the perfect shot — it’s all part of the magic.
To make the most of your time on safari and reduce long hours on the road, we frequently use light aircraft flights between key destinations in East Africa. These scenic flights not only save valuable hours that would otherwise be spent driving, but they also offer breathtaking aerial views of the vast savannas, winding rivers, and migrating herds below.
Whether connecting from the Maasai Mara to Amboseli, Tsavo, or even crossing into Tanzania or Rwanda, internal flights allow you to arrive refreshed and ready for your next adventure instead of tired from a full day of travel. This efficient approach maximizes your wildlife viewing time while adding another layer of magic to your safari experience.
Safe, comfortable, and incredibly exciting — this is how real African safaris are meant to be experienced.
What’s the weather like? When should I go?
East Africa offers excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year. Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda enjoy a pleasant climate year-round, with warm days and cool nights. Here’s a simple breakdown:
- Daytime Temperatures: Typically range from 75–86°F (24–30°C)
- Nighttime Temperatures: Usually drop to a comfortable 54–64°F (12–18°C)
My personal favorite time is June through October — the heart of the Great Wildebeest Migration. This is when you witness the dramatic river crossings, cooler temperatures, and some of the best predator action of the year.
However, every season has its own special magic:
- June–October (Dry Season): Excellent game viewing, fewer mosquitoes, and the famous Migration in full swing.
- November–March: Lush landscapes after the rains, abundant baby animals, and migratory birds.
- April–May (Green Season): Fewer crowds, amazing wildlife, incredible birdlife, and incredibly green, photogenic scenery.
No matter when you choose to travel, you’ll experience the soul of Africa in all its glory. I’ll help you pick the perfect time based on your interests — whether it’s the Migration, elephant encounters, or a more private safari experience.
Am I too old . . . or not fit enough?
There is no age limit on Kalama Safaris.
I’ve had the privilege of guiding guests from as young as 8 to as “young” as 98. Just last month, I had the joy of hosting a wonderful couple — a 98-year-old gentleman and his 86-year-old wife — on their 10th Kalama Safari. They laughed, they marveled at every sighting, and they left with even more beautiful memories.
Safari is not about being the fittest or the youngest. It’s about curiosity, wonder, and the desire to experience something extraordinary. That’s why we design every journey with flexibility and care:
- Modified vehicles and easy-access options
- Wheelchair-accessible camps and transfers available
- Personalized pacing — game drives, walking safaris, or relaxed lodge-based experiences
- Attentive staff who genuinely care about your comfort
No matter your age, our goal is simple: to help you experience the magic of Africa safely, comfortably, and joyfully.
You’re never too old, and you’re never too unfit. If you dream of being here, we’ll make it happen.

Stories & More
Discover the magic, the memories, and the deeply personal stories from our safaris.
The Beauty Queen Who Never Changes Her Dress
As a safari guide, I spend my days watching the wild. And the longer I do this, the more one simple truth settles in my heart:
Nature is so beautiful that it does not need to change its looks.
Think about us humans. How many times do we buy new clothes in different colors just to feel “enough”? A new shirt for the weekend, a different dress for the evening, something brighter, something newer. We keep changing, hoping the next outfit will finally make us look the way we want.
All Hell Broke Loose: A Zebra Love Triangle on Safari
There are mornings on safari when the African bush decides to put on a show.
We were in Amboseli, the plains glowing in soft morning light with Kilimanjaro watching in the distance. A small zebra herd grazed peacefully until two powerful stallions began circling each other. Ears pinned, necks arched, tension crackling in the air.
A beautiful mare stood nearby, watching. It was easy to imagine her sending a clear message: “I will be going out with the winner!”
He Built Ten Nests… and She Still Flew Away
Look at this little acrobat hanging there in the morning light!
Out here in the acacia woodland, where the golden weavers gather in their noisy colonies, you will often see exactly this scene — a bright male Taveta Golden Weaver swinging upside down, wings spread wide, busy weaving his future. His feathers shine like the sun on the savanna, and that touch of orange on his head shows he is ready for the serious business of finding a wife.
