At Kalama Safaris, we want you to feel confident, excited, and fully prepared for the journey of a lifetime. Whether you’re tracking the Great Migration in Kenya and Tanzania or coming face-to-face with mountain gorillas in Rwanda, these travel essentials will help you prepare for an unforgettable East African experience.

SAFETY

Your safety is our top priority.

  • All hotels and lodges are securely gated with 24-hour security.
  • In the evenings, guards escort guests to and from their rooms or tents and patrol the grounds.
  • We maintain close contact with the US Embassy for real-time travel advisories.
  • David Kalama, your safari director, personally adjusts itineraries when needed to avoid any risks and ensure your peace of mind.
  • All safari vehicles are thoroughly cleaned before every game drive and transfer.

MEALS

Expect a delicious variety of meals at every stop! Most lodges offer generous buffets, live pasta and omelet stations, and à la carte menus featuring Western, International, and flavorful local East African dishes.

Chefs are happy to accommodate special dietary needs — whether you’re gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, or have other requirements. All meals are included in your tour price so you can relax and enjoy every bite.

WEATHER & CLIMATE

Rain rarely disrupts our carefully planned safaris. Here’s what to expect:

  • January–March: Excellent time for Kenya and Tanzania — warm, dry, and wildlife-rich.
  • March–Early May: Low season with occasional rains — fewer crowds and greener landscapes.
  • July–September: Peak high season — cool, dry, and perfect for spotting animals.
  • October–December: Warm with short, scattered rains.

Average Temperatures:
Kenya: 50–86°F (10–30°C)
Tanzania: 46–82°F (8–29°C)
Rwanda: 54–82°F (12–28°C)

RWANDA & Primate TREKKING

Rwanda’s national parks offer the world’s most memorable and emotional primate trekking experiences.

Trekking to see mountain gorillas is the highlight for many guests.

  • Treks last 2–6 hours (moderate to strenuous) through misty bamboo forests.
  • Only 8 people per gorilla family per day for minimal impact.
  • You will spend one unforgettable hour with these gentle giants.

Golden monkey, chimpanzee, and other primate trekking experiences are available and featured in many of Kalama Safaris’ Rwandan tours.

Best trekking months: June–September and December–February (drier conditions).

We’ll prepare you with the right gear, fitness tips, and permits so your primate experiences are safe and magical.

TRUSTED TRAVEL

  • Safari vehicles are comfortable 4×4 open-top vehicles for wildlife viewing on game drives.
  • Drive times average 2–6 hours between destinations, with plenty of scenic stops.
  • Many itineraries include local flights to save time and maximize your safari experience.
  • International flights are not included (direct flights from JFK to Nairobi take about 14 hours).

GUIDES & GAME DRIVES

Our expert English-speaking driver-guides are masters at spotting wildlife and positioning vehicles for the best views and photographs.

  • Game drives last 2–6 hours, sometimes with bush breakfasts or lunches.
  • Window seats are guaranteed for everyone.
  • Bottled water, soft drinks, and juices provided on every drive.
  • Early morning and late afternoon drives offer the best lighting and animal activity.

THE GREAT MIGRATION

Witness one of nature’s greatest spectacles: 1.7 million wildebeests, 260,000 zebras, and hundreds of thousands of gazelles on the move — followed by predators. We carefully time your itinerary so you’re in the right place at the right time for dramatic river crossings and vast herds.

BIRD WATCHING

East Africa is a paradise for birders, with over 1,000 species. From colorful bee-eaters to majestic eagles and the rare shoebill stork in Rwanda, our guides will help you spot and identify them.
