Samburu National Reserve – Kenya
Situated in the north of Kenya, beyond the equator, the Samburu National Reserve is a land of rugged beauty, dramatic landscapes, and unique wildlife. Covering an area of 165 square kilometers (64 square miles), this special reserve features dry savannah, rocky hills, acacia woodlands, and the life-giving Uaso Nyiro River that flows through the heart of the park. Beautiful scenes along the river, exciting game drives across the arid plains, a bush walk with Samburu warriors, or a visit to the local Samburu community are all part of an amazing and authentic experience here.
The magical Samburu National Reserve delivers many attractions. It is home to an excellent concentration of rare and unique wildlife sightings that you cannot easily find in other parts of Kenya. The reserve is especially known for its Special Five animals, including Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx, and the long-necked gerenuk. It also supports big cats such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs, along with large herds of elephants that come to the river to drink and bathe.
This beautiful reserve is truly a photographer’s and naturalist’s paradise. It offers wonderful opportunities to capture stunning images of wildlife in a dramatic, sun-drenched landscape. Abundant elephants, reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebras, and other unique species roam the area alongside big cats and many other animals. Leopards can often be seen resting in the trees or moving through the riverine forests. The Uaso Nyiro River attracts large numbers of hippos and crocodiles, while the surrounding plains and woodlands are home to many different antelopes and over 450 species of birds, including many dry-country specials.
The Samburu National Reserve provides a very different safari experience compared to the southern parks. With fewer visitors and a wild, remote feeling, it gives you the chance to enjoy nature more peacefully and intimately. The combination of unique wildlife, scenic beauty, and rich Samburu culture makes this reserve one of the most rewarding destinations in East Africa.
At Kalama Safaris, we are very familiar with the Samburu area and know the best places to find the animals and enjoy the landscape. Whether you come for wildlife photography, to see the special northern animals, or to experience the authentic Samburu culture, an amazing adventure awaits.
