Volcanoes National Park – Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park is the centerpiece for all Rwanda gorilla safaris. It shelters the highest number of mountain gorillas in the entire Virunga Conservation Area, making it one of the best places in the world to see these magnificent and endangered primates in their natural habitat.

The strategic location of Volcanoes National Park makes it the most accessible gorilla park in the world. It is only about a 2-hour drive from Kigali International Airport, allowing visitors to reach the gorillas quickly and comfortably. Besides the famous mountain gorillas, the park is also home to the rare and beautiful golden monkeys, as well as a rich variety of birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and many other creatures. Together, these wonderful animals make Volcanoes National Park a complete and unforgettable Rwanda safari destination.

Spanning an area of 160 square kilometers in the northern part of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park forms part of the greater Virunga Volcanoes Conservation Region. This important transboundary protected area also includes Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. The park was initially established as a small protected area around the volcanoes and has since grown into a vital sanctuary for mountain gorillas and other wildlife.

The landscape of Volcanoes National Park is truly spectacular, with lush bamboo forests, open meadows, and towering volcanic peaks that create a dramatic and beautiful setting. Trekking through the misty forests to spend time with a family of mountain gorillas is an experience that touches the heart and creates memories that last a lifetime. The golden monkey trekking is another highlight that many visitors enjoy, offering playful and energetic encounters with these rare primates.
