Serengeti National Park – famous for annual migration of over 1.5 million white-bearded wildebeest and 250,000 zebra, numerous Nile crocodile and honey badger, “Big Five” elephant, leopard, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion; over 500 bird species; olive baboons and vervet monkey; gazelle, hyena, jackals, mongooses.
Lake Ndutu (Serengeti) – strong cheetah and lion populations, common are hartebeest, spotted hyena, and jackals. January and March the migrating herds of over 1.4 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras return to the rich Ndutu short grass plains for calving that usually peaks around February.
Ngorongoro Crater – approximately 25,000 large animals live in the crater including the black rhinoceros, Cape buffalo, hippopotamus, blue wildebeest, Grant’s zebra, common eland, and Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles, waterbucks, and one of the densest populations of lions
Zanzibar – 240 bird species; 54 terrestrial mammals including 23 species of bats (popo in Swahili), the bushy-tailed mongoose (local name chongwe), the small blue duiker – a suni (mammalian) or dwarf antelope (just 15 in or 380 mm tall), the African and small Indian civet, and the Zanzibar red colobus that has been known to consume charcoal, possibly a learned behavior, after eating the leaves of the Indian almond tree and Mangifera indica mango.
